Siprus Sebut Lebanon Halangi Kembalinya 116 Migran Suriah

NICOSIA: Cyprus said on Tuesday it was in discussions with Lebanon over the return of 116 Syrian migrants rescued off its coast after Beirut refused to accept them back.
The migrants were rescued in international waters 30 nautical miles off Cyprus at the weekend after departing Lebanon by boat, Cypriot officials said.
Cyprus, the European Union’s easternmost member, has for years had an agreement in place with Lebanon for the return of irregular migrants.

NICOSIA: A child discovered unconscious on a boat drifting for days in the eastern Mediterranean has died, health authorities in Cyprus said on Thursday.
The girl was among a group of 60 Syrians who were located by a Cypriot search and rescue team on a heavily-loaded fishing boat 30 nautical miles off Cyprus on Wednesday morning. They had been at sea since Jan. 18, after sailing from Lebanon.
“Unfortunately one of the three children has died. It was a sudden death caused by cardiac arrest,” a spokesman for Cyprus’s national health organization told Alpha Cyprus TV.

NICOSIA: Cyprus announced a series of gestures to support estranged Turkish Cypriots on Friday, days before the visit of a United Nations envoy who will assess prospects for the resumption of long-stalled peace talks.
The list of 14 measures includes expediting the examination of citizenship applications, broadening access for Turkish Cypriots to a range of state services, and easing bottlenecks at crossing points between the two sides of the island.
