Siprus Sebut Lebanon Halangi Kembalinya 116 Migran Suriah

NICOSIA: Cyprus said on Tuesday it was in discussions with Lebanon over the return of 116 Syrian migrants rescued off its coast after Beirut refused to accept them back.
The migrants were rescued in international waters 30 nautical miles off Cyprus at the weekend after departing Lebanon by boat, Cypriot officials said.
Cyprus, the European Union’s easternmost member, has for years had an agreement in place with Lebanon for the return of irregular migrants.

BEIRUT: Daesh group terrorists killed nine Syrian soldiers in the war-torn country’s vast Badia desert on Tuesday, a war monitor said.
“Nine Syrian soldiers were killed and three wounded” when they had gathered in the east of Hama province in central Syria, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
IS has stepped up attacks in Syria in recent months, particularly in the Badia desert which runs from the outskirts of Damascus to the Iraqi border.

Enterprising owners have upgraded their businesses with generators and batteries to guarantee power and draw in Damascenes plagued by Syria’s war-battered and crumbling infrastructure.

DUBAI: Syrian air defenses shot down on Friday two drones in the west of Damascus, state media reported, citing a military source as saying the drones came from the direction of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights to the west of the capital.
The Israeli military has said it does not comment on reports in foreign media.
Syrian state media reported earlier that the air defenses were responding to “hostile targets” in the vicinity of Damascus.

“Five people have been killed including three civilians — a woman, a child, and a man — and seven others were injured in Israeli strikes on a building in the Hamra neighborhood of Homs city,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, updating an earlier toll of four.
The identities of the two non-civilian casualties were unknown, the monitor said.

DAMASCUS: Israeli strikes hit Syria’s Homs on Wednesday, state media said, as the Gaza war fuels tensions across the Middle East.
“SANA correspondent in Homs: Our air defense intercepted hostile targets in the central region,” Syria’s official news agency SANA said.
Syrian state television also reported “an Israeli assault” on central Syria, in the Homs province.
Last week, the United States carried out strikes on Iran-backed groups in Syria and Iraq, killing dozens in retaliation for a deadly attack on its troops in Jordan.

The 24-year-old woman along with her son and daughter were rescued during an ongoing security operation by Kurdish fighters in Syria’s northeastern sprawling Al-Hol camp that houses tens of thousands of people, mostly wives and children of Islamic State fighters as well as supporters of the militant group, the SDF said.

LONDON: Jordan is not, and will never become, a permanent resettlement destination for Syrian refugees, the country’s interior minister, Mazin Al-Farrayeh, said on Monday.

Speaking during a visit to the Azraq and Emirati-Jordanian refugee camps, he said Jordan hosts about 1.3 million Syrian refugees and noted the challenges that arise from this as a result of insufficient international aid, which last year met only 30 percent of the required funding, the Jordan News Agency reported.

DAMASCUS: Syrian President Bashar Assad ordered Monday a 50-percent pay rise for civil servants, military personnel and public sector pensioners, with the economy in free fall and inflation soaring after nearly 13 years of war.
Assad announced a similar decision last year, doubling salaries and pension payments, while also lifting fuel subsidies.
The Syrian economy has been battered by the conflict that has killed more than 500,000 people and displaced millions since it began in 2011.
