Muslims make up nearly a third of the state’s 100 million population and have been present in the region since the 13th century, making significant contributions to Bengali socio-linguistic identity, literature and culture.

NEW DELHI: Indian police said on Monday that they had arrested five people over an assault on international students who were offering prayers during Ramadan at a university hostel in Gujarat.

Officials say that a heated argument over the location of the prayers had led to the physical assault in Gujarat University in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Angkatan Laut India Cegat Perompak Somalia di Kapal Kargo Ruen

An Indian navy warship has intercepted the hijacked the cargo ship Ruen and demanded the Somali pirates on board surrender, a navy spokesperson said on Saturday.
The pirates who allegedly hijacked the Maltese-flagged bulk cargo vessel on Dec. 14 opened fire on the navy ship in international waters on Friday, the spokesperson said without providing further details.
The navy had called on the pirates to surrender and release the vessel and any civilians they may be holding.
